Chapter 7

Five minutes after Amy put Jared’s call through to Candace, the light on the console indicating that Candace’s phone was in use went out.

Amy had consciously kept her project limited strictly to her own time and out of earshot of office personnel. Jill hadn’t said a word about it since their discussion nearly two weeks ago, so it seemed she was pretending the event didn’t exist. The ostrich approach worked just fine for Amy. The less confrontation, the better. She just didn’t know what Jill had said to Candace about what she was doing. Candace hadn’t mentioned it at all.

She was about to, though. There wasn’t a doubt about that in Amy’s mind when the tall blonde in the jersey wrap dress and chunky necklace walked up with her coffee mug in hand and stopped just short of the desk.

“Do you have a minute?” she asked, and turned back down the hall before Amy could say a word.

The quick, letdown sensation Amy had felt when Jared asked to talk to Candace had already been buried. Now, adjusting the wide, low-slung belt she wore with her knit sheath, she headed down the hall herself.

Candace walked into the break room with Amy right behind her.

“Jared called to change the date of his presentation.” Looking every bit as casual as she sounded, Candace crossed the small space with its colorful molded chairs and two round tables. “We were scheduled for next week, but he told me he didn’t need the campaign that soon and didn’t want me to feel I had to rush.” Smiling as if she thought his consideration very sweet, she stopped at the stainless steel coffeemaker on the back wall counter. Apparently, she was getting her coffee herself. “We rescheduled for the fourteenth of November. That gives us another month.”

“I’ll make that change on the office schedule.”

“You’ll do a memo, too?”

“Of course.”

“He’s coming back sooner than he’d planned,” she continued. Pulling out one of the two carafes, she poured coffee into her mug. “But I’m sure you already know that.” The carafe clinked back into place a moment before her puzzled eyes met Amy’s. “You never mentioned that Jared was working on your fund-raiser with you.”

There was no accusation in her expression. Only a certain incomprehension that made it clear she didn’t understand why Amy had failed to mention that she was working with this particular client. A client Candace seemed to expect her to know she was interested in on more than a professional basis.

Rather than ask why she’d thought mention was necessary, since Candace hadn’t discussed Jared with her at all, Amy spared herself hearing what was so obvious to the entire office. Anyone who’d seen Candace with him, overheard a conversation with her girlfriends, or seen her after she’d talked with him on the phone, knew she was verging on serious lust with the man.

“He’s not working on the fund-raiser with me,” Amy replied, not caring to consider what she felt about him herself. Gratitude she could deal with.
